Monthly Wrap Up-Omnibus

23.09.2011.

KMI’s network of 26 Radio station across Kosovo has been broadcasting the weekly Radio Program “Europe Now in Kosovo” since January 2011. The program is produced by EUPK and features initiatives, projects and event related to the EU support for the development of Kosovo in a variety of different social spheres. As a result, the Radio audience gets a diverse picture of EU supported initiatives from all over Kosovo in many different areas, with the focus of the program shifting from one geographic and content area to another every week. In order to increase the efficiency of dissemination of  information and add valuable local content, the monthly program “Europe For Kosovo, (name of the city) And Me” will present a “localized” monthly wrap-up of the shows aired during the preceding month and will put them in the context of local EU related developments. This program will be in a form of “Talk Show Type” – 30 minutes blend of previous “Europe Now in Kosovo” radio bulletins and discussion by a local host with a local guest featuring and commenting on the reports of the month and adding local content. The monthly broadcasts will use the advantage of the KMI Radio network, which services local audiences and will help put the overall picture of EU support to Kosovo in local context by adding local initiatives and voices, thus contributing to better reach to national audiences and especially to minority media, which does not usually follow other Kosovo national media programs. The program will be aired in Albanian and in Serbian, depending on the area served by the respective Radio station.

Conference on Copyright Issues 2011

20.09.2011.

Intellectual Property, Music Rights, Authors and Broadcasters

As part of its activities related to the complex issues of the intellectual property, the Kosovo Media Institute organized a conference on copyright issues (‘Intellectual Property, Music Rights, Authors and Broadcasters’). The event took place on September 13th at EU Information and Cultural Centre in Pristina.

Copyright conference gathered representatives of the broadcast sector (including RTK) and, for the first time, their counterpart from the Association of Music Authors of Kosovo (APIK).

Panelists were Ms. Ardita Zejnullahu (Association of Independent Electronic Media), Mr. Skender Boshtrakaj (Ministry of Culture), Mr. Florent Boshnjaku (Association of Music Authors), Mr. Feim Kurhasani (Radio Dukagjini), Mr. Isak Vorgucic (Radio KIM Caglavica/KOSMA network), Ms. Minire Fetahu (RTK), Mr. Driton Qeriqi (IREX, legal media advisor), Mr. Nehat Islami (Press Council), Mr. Kelmend Hapciu (Kosovo Media Institute) and Mr. Davor Glavas (Media Advocacy Expert, EU Support to the Kosovo Media Institute – phase II).

Topics discussed were:

  • Current global trends in protection of the intellectual property and music rights;
  • Current Kosovo legal framework on the issue;
  • Existing models of royalties collection;
  • Identifying the best royalties collection model for Kosovo.

All parties have agreed that the next step should include an active participation of the Independent Media Commission. KMI has already contacted the IMC, in order to get as wider representation of the broadcast sector in the forthcoming debate on the royalties collection model as possible.

BBC Academy training course for KMI trainees

10.03.2011.

As part of the KMI training activities, the Institute has managed to create the link between the Diploma Course and the BBC Training Academy, probably the best training provider worldwide.

The KMI Diploma Course trainers had selected the best 2010 trainee (Ms. Mirela Dupljak) and the best 2011 trainees (Ms. Mimoza Kqiku and Mr. Behar Mustafa) and KMI awarded them with a very special prize: enrolment to the BBC Academy Training course.

The BBC Academy training arrangement (usually relatively restricted for the non-BBC participants) had been made possible by a special engagement of the KMI, who secured the best available training course for the KMI trainees. Ms. Mirela Dupljak, Ms. Mimoza Kqiku and Mr. Behar Mustafa attended ‘Writing for Television’ training course, the choice of their selection.

The training course took place in the week of August 29 at White City (London), the very centre of the BBC TV production and training.

As part of the training component, Mirela, Mimoza and Behar visited the BBC TV Production Centre and BBC Broadcasting House, iconic production, development and broadcasting centres.  During the visit, KMI trainees had a unique opportunity to get a first-hand insight into the latest developments in TV production and broadcasting technology.

The BBC Academy training was an invaluable experience for Mirela, Mimoza and Behar.

Their experience will be used in their daily practice and shared with their fellow journalists in Kosovo, for sure.

Copyright Conference May 2010

08.06.2010.

May 28, 2010 – The Kosovo Media Institute KMI  hosted a conference on copyright in Mitrovica on May 28th, 2010. Purpose was to discuss the effect of the copyright law on the media, in particular radio stations.

Although the law has been in force for several years, the Office for Intellectual Property had not yet been established. Thus, collecting societies have not been registered, and radio stations have been able to play music without clearing the rights.

Key-note speakers from FYROM and Bosnia Herzegovina explained what happened when collecting societies became operational in their respective countries. They recommended the Kosovo media to collectively present their position to the Ministry of Culture and – once established – the Office for Intellectual Property.
